Song Written in Carter’s Time Relevant Today

Merel Haggard wrote this song in 1980, when Jimmy Carter was taking the country down the toilet. He laments:

I wish a buck was still silver.
It was back when the country was strong.
Back before Elvis; before the Vietnam war came along.
Before The Beatles and “Yesterday”,
When a man could still work, and still would.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?
Are we rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the Flag or the Liberty bell.
Wish a Ford and a Chevy,
Could still last ten years, like they should.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good
?

At the time, the media was telling us that we had to live with less, that the Soviets were the wave of the future, that America had passed her prime, that a single president could not handle it all.

Now, Obama has taken us down the same decrepit hole, and the song is as relevant today as it was back then – perhaps more so, because Carter never weakened the country as severely as Obama has done.

Here, via Powerline, on Merle Haggard’s birthday, is the song
